Australia (pronounced /əˈstreɪljə/ ə-STRAYL-yə or /ɒˈstreɪljə/ o-STRAYL-yə, or more formally as /ɔːˈstreɪliə/ aw-STRAY-lee-ə), officially the Commonwealth of Australia, is a country in the Southern Hemisphere comprising the continental mainland (the world's smallest), the island of Tasmania, and numerous smaller islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Neighbouring countries include Indonesia, East Timor, and Papua New Guinea to the north, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, and New Caledonia to the north-east, and New Zealand to the southeast. For some 40,000 years before European settlement commenced in the late 18th century, the Australian mainland and Tasmania were inhabited by around 250 individual nations of indigenous Australians. After sporadic visits by fishermen from the immediate north, and European discovery by Dutch explorers in 1606, the eastern half of Australia was claimed by the British in 1770 and initially settled through penal transportation to the colony of New South Wales, founded on 26 January 1788. The population grew steadily in the following years; the continent was explored, and during the 19th century another five largely self-governing Crown Colonies were established. On 1 January 1901, the six colonies became a federation, and the Commonwealth of Australia was formed. Since Federation, Australia has maintained a stable liberal democratic political system and remains a Commonwealth realm. The population is almost 21.9 million, with approximately 60% concentrated in and around the mainland state capitals of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide. The nation's capital city is Canberra, located in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). Australia is a developed country, with a prosperous multicultural society and has excellent results in many international comparisons of national performance such as health care, life expectancy, quality of life, human development, public education, economic freedom, and the protection of civil liberties and political rights. Australian cities routinely rank among the world's highest in terms of cultural offerings and quality of life. It is a member of the United Nations, G-20 major economies, Commonwealth of Nations, ANZUS, OECD, and the WTO. From Wikipedia under the

Q. What do you think the score will be between Australia and Iraq in the football world cup qualifier on Sunday? Asked by Jemma - Fri May 30 00:30:40 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. It will be a close game with Iraq defending as hard as they can. If they manage to get a goal it will be a 1 - 1 draw or possibly if Australia plays and passes well a 2 - 1 win (Australia). Answered by holic - Sun Jun 1 01:26:10 2008 Is there anywhere in Australia that i can get personalised baby clothes? Q. Ive had a bit of a look on the net (australian sites only) and havent had any luck - i was wanting to get a t-shirt or jumpsuit for my 11 week old son and be able to tell them what words i wanted on the front - does anyone know where i can get this in Australia? Asked by kjay - Mon Oct 15 03:37:16 2007 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. I don't know the name of the store but my sister got clothes done with her daughters name from someone on eBay. They could do any writing she wanted as well...not just the name. The tops and bibs she bought from them were really good quality as well as the writing on them. Good luck. Answered by West Aussie Chick - Mon Oct 15 04:30:24 2007 How expensive are cigarettes in Australia?
Q. I'm planning on travelling to Australia next year, and you can only bring in 250 of your own cigarettes. I was just wondering what the average prices are on cigarettes there. Asked by Jim L - Wed Apr 25 09:02:50 2007 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. The prices have already been answered but here's a hint - smokes can be $1-3 dollars cheaper if you buy it at supermarkets and tobacco shops - never buy from service / petrol stations as they are the most expensive!
