Intermittent fasting (IF) is a pattern of eating in which one alternates between periods of fasting (typically consuming only water) and non-fasting. A specific form of IF is alternate day fasting (ADF), which is a 48-hour routine typically composed of a 24-hour fast followed by a 24-hour non-fasting period (also known as every other day (EOD) fasting, or sometimes every other day feeding (EODF)).

There is some evidence that intermittent fasting may have beneficial effects on the health and longevity of animals—including humans—that are similar to the effects of caloric restriction (CR). There is currently no consensus as to the degree to which this is simply due to a concomitant decrease in overall calories (in which case IF is a form of CR: specifically the subset of Dietary Restriction (DR) sometimes referred to as Dietary Energy Restriction (DER)).

Scientific study of intermittent fasting in rats (and anecdotally in humans) was carried out at least as early as 1943.

Is this anorexia or a completely harmless way of losing weight?
Q. Okay, so 2 weeks back I got a lil stressed with a friend (ongoing problem) and lost my appetite, as in I'd eat once every few days. I done some research on this and found out it was scientifically proven to be beneficial to your overall health - called Intermittent Fasting. 2 weeks on and I've dropped from 128 lb.'s to 115 lb.'s - I'm feeling happier than ever and finally getting back into shape, and hoping to maintain this until I get back down to 105 lb.'s. I'm 5'3 btw! However, I'm getting A LOT of problems from family and friends, saying I'm basically verging on anorexia. I'm not purposely starving myself, as I'm not feeling hunger and cravings as you would expect from eating once every 3rd day. It's been - in all honesty - very easy… [cont.]

A. You cannot absorb some vitamins without fat. You should eat three meals a day and make sure you are getting your daily allowances. There are more then just vitamins that you need to be healthy, I would recommend forcing yourself to eat at least twice a day. Some refined protein, some salad, fish. Why don't you look into adopting a vegetarian lifestyle or dare i say vegan ::Shudders:: I know you are feeling well now, but think about all the things that can hit you all the sudden. Right now you feel fine but next week you feel a pain in your side an you go-to the hospital with an inflamed liver or something else. Now that your stomach has shrunk and is as small as its going to get you have an advantage of not being hungry, but just… [cont.]

Teeth extracted -- shouldn't the pain be almost gone?
Q. I had my 4 wisdom teeth extracted 7 days ago. Got dry socket in a at least one of the lowers. Packing took care of that pain, but now I've been experiencing severe intermittent jaw joint, ear and tooth pain. The dentist said I'm experiencing trismus. From what I've read online, I'm tempted to ask for x-rays (hairline fracture?). If it's trismus, shouldn't the pain be letting up faster? Any dental experts that can help me?

A. Though post-operative pain following 4 third molar extractions can last about 14 days (especially after having a dry socket) joint and ear pain are not to be expected a week post-operatively. Trismus (lock jaw) sounds like it could be a possibility, though most patients would not simply have issues with Trismus surface after an extraction - they would have a history of it. A fracture is also unlikely given that your pain is described to be in your jaw and ear. I would suggest seeing an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon or someone who specializes in craniofacial issues. In the meantime, be sure to use compresses with Ice for about 20 minutes every hour then rotate that with warm towels for 20 minutes - this should help. Also, naproxen… [cont.]
