does malnutrition in initial months of pregnancy affect mental growth of the fetus and child born?
Q. I suspect that malnutrition and nausea in initial months of my pregnancy could affect my child's mental growth after he is born. Any evidence or anyone knows more to this ? I am really concerned that my child will have mental growth and slowed or other malformations.

A. Not usually, the child will take whatever nutrition it needs from you even if it's from your bones, orgrans...(not literally of course, the vitamins that are found there is what I mean), this is why a pregnant woman needs to have proper nutrition. I understand morning sickness can prevent us from eating healthy or at all but you must at least try to have some healthy and always take your prenatal vitamins. Actually eating small meals often reduces morning sickness, even if it's watered down soup.

Q. For a school project, we each had to focus on a part of the holocaust; some people got to cover the experimentation, some got to deal with the beatings, I get to cover the malnutrition. Anyone else thing this is depressing? Well, anyways, if you could send me a few good links that tell me about their diet, that would be helpful.

A. First de-worm him to make sure his body is absorbing all the nutrients from the food you are giving him. If you are feeding him good, but he has intestinal worms, the worms are going to steal all the nutrients his body needs. Feed him several small meals a day. High quality puppy food would be ideal. Don't just feed him something like Iams or Pedigree. Go to the pet store and get Nutro Ultra or Blue Buffalo. Also give him canned puppy food, it has more calories in it, and will help keep his energy and blood sugar up! Don't let him crash from low blood sugar! If he is emaciated and only eating dry, you need to give him a little honey every day or go to the pet store and get Nutri Cal, it is a dietary supplement for extra calories and it… [cont.]

Q. Can anyone please help explain the cycles of malnutrition, and who it impacts?
Asked by Tatersmama - Wed Nov 19 18:32:26 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Hey Tatermama, Malnutrition is a serious problem. I can't tell you about any cycles of malnutrition but can answer your question from the perspective of its impacts over the human due to stress. Malnutrition definitely causes stress for your body. Irrelevant if you overeat, under eat or just don't eat the right quality of food - your body just does not get what it needs. What are the results? Insufficiencies of major nutrients, vitamins and minerals which progressively accumulate and eventually will result in discomfort, suspetibility to virus attacks, stress. The bad thing with stress is that it affects any part of the human body. No exceptions! Specifically with malnutrition you can expect the problems to start with the digesting… [cont.]

What are some diseases caused by severe malnutrition?
Q. Speaking in terms of Africa and the famine there (not anorexia in 1st world countries) what are the most common diseases that directly derive from malnutrition? thanks so much to all the answers! very very helpful:)
Asked by Bea12345 - Mon May 26 18:43:40 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Malnutrition doesn't directly cause disease but it leaves a person susceptible to a host of diseases and deficiency diseases. Infections that the healthy body ordinarily fights off can become epic battles for the malnourished and can progress to more serious conditions. Deficiency diseases are the more common and immediate outcome. Deficiency diseases are caused by a lack/insufficency of vitamins and minerals. Sounds like you're doing research on this so take it a step further and do the research. Run searches for "vitamin deficiency diseases" , "mineral deficiency diseases" and "diseases caused by malnutrition". I'm quite certain you'll find lots of information.

A. why sure! it's called fatty liver or NASH. malnutrition is a hard way of putting it, more than likely they were on the wrong diet, ie, too little fat absorbtion or too much. extreme weight loss or weight gain can cause nash. other things can cause cirrhosis like iron, viral infections (hep b or c), over the counter meds.

Asked by Mr. Tea - Thu Jan 28 14:52:41 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Google malnutrition and get the definition. Basically, it means not getting enough good, nutritious food. This doesn't necessarily mean you're not getting food at all, although in poor countries this can be the case. It can mean you're eating too few foods, or foods that aren't helping your body function properly. There are several diseases, like scurvy, ricketts, etc which result from the lack of certain vitamins rather than a lack of food. Preventing and correcting are a matter of changing or enhancing the diet.

A. dehydration is characterized by dry lips, dry tongue (it will look all dry like a raisin), poor skin turgor (if you pinch the skin on the persons arm lets say and the skin stays tented up and does not fall immediately back then that is poor skin turgor), very dark urine, decreased urine output, dizziness, headache, hypotension and could lead to lethargy(being very tired and weak). In the elderly dehydration can be very bad. Use gatorade or pedialyte to try to increase their electrolytes and watch their urine output. If their urine is clear then that is a good sign that they are getting enough fluid. If you can't get them rehydrated with these steps or you believe that they are beyond this initial treatment then take them to the… [cont.]

A. In rural areas, chances are no one died of malnutrition or even starvation. In the cities, it was more likely, but keep in mind that there were all kinds of charities specifically for feeding the poor and unemployed. Because help was available for many who chose to use it, there were far fewer cases of starvation than malnutrition.

A. Actually, the very first day that you deprived yourself of less than 1000 calories, your metabolism slowed. Each day since, it has slowed even more and your body feeds off muscles, which provide more energy than fat. So, you are technically "fatter" than before you began. I suggest you begin taking a multivitamen and eating a healthy, well balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, protien, and calcium. You can still loose weight and eat healthy amounts of food. Before too long, you will start losing hair, getting paler, constantly irritable, and your immune system will be so low that you will catch every flu and cold coming & going.

What are the psychological affects of malnutrition in children?
Q. Anything that affects development and growth. Mostly psychological.
Asked by abel p - Wed Aug 9 22:20:42 2006 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The effects of malnutrition in children are many and, unfortunately, are often irreversable. Initially, of course, there are the physical manifestations: slowed growth rate, lack of energy. Then the kwashinor effect -- the pot belly that looks as though the child had over-eaten, but in fact its stomach is empty. As the child falls behind in physical development, a similar process in taking place with its mental development. The brain is an organ, and must be nourished to work properly. Malnutrition prevents this, and a malnourished brain can not learn as a healthy brain can. The psychological effects include lethargy (in part this is a physical manifestation, but it also becomes psychological, as there is no longer a reason to care. It… [cont.]

What are a few good, reasonably feasible solutions to ending hunger in Africa and malnutrition in Africa?
Q. This is for a school project, and I'm really stumped!

A. There are no reasonably feasible solutions for ending hunger and malnutrition in Africa. Africa is so diverse and complex between tribes and between countries, and with so much war and government corruption, that nothing is reasonable feasible. The real way to end hunger and malnutrition is to bring Africa out of the third world with education, clean water, health care and family management. As long as so many people stay poor, families will be larger and unhealthier and in need of more food. Most families have more than 5 or 6 children. If we give them all a good education, and good health care, people will start to live better lives. And as people start to live better lives, the average family size goes down which means that they won't [cont.]

A. I hope you realize that is exactly how Terri Schiavo ended up in a vegetative state... she went on a severe 6 week diet and had a stroke from potassium deficiency. I would say at three or four weeks, your body will begin to suffer. Try to at least take a vitamin supplement. They have very few calories. I think what you are attempting is futile, though. You're mainly losing muscle and water weight... it would be so much better for your body if you ate well and exercised more to lose... Stop being in such a hurry to lose the weight. After all, the goal is to be healthy, right? What your'e doing is not healthy.
