Is there an alternative to palm sugar.?
Q. I have a recipe that calls for palm sugar but can't find it at the grocery shop. Is there another sugar that's close enough. I thought maybe raw sugar?

A. Do you have a South Asian grocery nearby? You can substitute jaggery (which is date palm sugar). You can also just use brown sugar. I've had success substituting brown sugar for jaggery.

A. Palm sugar and coconut sugars (nahm dtahn bpeep/buk & nahm dtahn maprao): Although the names are used interchangeably, palm sugar and coconut sugar are not the same. One comes from the palmyra or sugar palm and the other from coconut palm, but both are produced from the sweet, watery sap that drips from cut flower buds. The sap is collected each morning and boiled in huge woks on the plantations until a sticky sugar remains. This is whipped and dropped in lumps on cellophane, or filled into containers. Because it is not highly processed like brown sugar, the color, consistency, flavor and level of sweetness can vary from batch to batch, even within the same brand. The color can be as light as creamy beige and as dark as rich caramel… [cont.]

Does pizza raise blood sugar level?
Q. I am a prediabetic with fasting blood sugar reading of 125 on 10 hours absolute fasting. Last night I ate three small palm-size plain cheese pizzas. Today I am having a sort of headache and the stomach is not free. Does eating pizza rasie the blood sugar?? Will a person get headaches if sugar level is high in his or her body?? Please advise.
Asked by CUTE GUY - Sun Oct 4 02:09:56 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. absolute fasting only increases your blood sugar because you have glucose reserves on your body, dont think that not eating will help you. it will make you worse. and pizza is very bad for diabetics.. dont eat it. Eat chicken or fish... avoid fats. and sugars. you will get headaches, yes when you have high blood sugar, but also when you have low blood sugar... nothing is definite. it's best if a doctor advices you.

Do you think a high sugar and flour diet is deadly to the body?
Q. I was wondering if I should cut out wheat permanently as I bloat badly with bread, pastry, flour products. I also think that sugar is terrible for me now I am over 30 as I do not seem to burn it off quite the same. Is it a coincidence that these foods which are relatively new (in the past 50 years or so) damage health and add lots of body fat? previously, peoples diets tended to focus on veg and fresh meats with only minimal treats. The explosion of trans fats and palm oils, sugar etc ,do you think it is the cause of most peoples obesity? Do these foods have the power to also contribute to metabolism problems etc?
Asked by Abigail - Tue Feb 24 06:04:25 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Absolutely. High sugar, flour, trans foods are the cause fo most obesity and health problems. A healthy diet does not mean starvation or tasteless foods. Yet a corrective diet does not mean either starvation or the grim necessity of eating unpalatable foods. Moreover, a little experimenting in the kitchen will soon produce meals that, from the standpoint of taste and esthetic appeal, will be equal if not superior to, the high-fat dishes to which you are accustomed. You do not have to lose energy good diet increases vigor. Neither does it mean a loss of energy or a sharp reduction in poundage, unless you are overweight, in which case the excess fat is melted off. A balanced diet includes all variety of foods.

What's the worst oil or sugar that they use on chips, candy or junk food?
Q. example: corn syrup, hydrogenated palm kernel oil... etc...
Asked by Jake - Tue Jul 17 23:38:21 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. hydrogenated anything is really bad for you, especially soybean oil and coconut oils, these are better in their natural state, they hydrogenate it to give it a longer more stable shelf life but in turn it is the worst thing you can ever put into your body.

Where can I get cheap, raw honey?
Q. I'm interested in using natural sweeteners, but they seem to cost an arm and a leg! If possible, I would like to get some raw honey for under $8 or so. If I can't afford these, is it still ok to use processed honey? Or perhaps I should switch to agave nectar or palm sugar? I don't know what to do to sweeten my desserts and teas without breaking the bank. If it help, I use processed stevia so far.
Asked by Chai Addict - Sun Nov 29 07:49:29 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Stevia is actually a great choice. It has 0 calories and is a completely natural sweetener. Yes, it has to be extracted from the plant but then so does palm sugar and most other sweeteners, including maple syrup (very natural, just concentrated from the sap and...expensive). Just stay away from refined sugar(this is what they do to cane sugar when they take out all the nutrients and sometimes bleach it as well). The processing that honey goes through involves removal of any extraneous material (like flower parts or other plant material or junk that might have gotten in there) and pasteurizing the liquid to kill any bacteria but the latter is just the reason that some people prefer it raw...the idea is that the raw stuff has healthy… [cont.]

Is it true that the turnip is for human consumption, by intelligent design?
Q. The turnip itself fits the contours of the human hand perfectly. Whether a child or adult, it fits neatly in the crevice where you might palm a playing card or a ping pong ball or a propho from a drunk fraternity brother. The greens may be boiled and eaten with vinegar and a touch of sugar, providing sustenance. Furthermore, bacon may be added for extra flavor, complementing it perfectly. Did the creator of the turnip intelligently design it? Or did it just come about purely by chance?

Has someone you know by saying something apparently honest and to the point reduced you to a blithering idiot?
Q. Until yesterday I couldn't have even given anyone a working definition of the term "blithering". And then, quite out of the blue, one of my contacts in the midst of a conversation reduces me from debatably rational human to a fruit throwing, capering loon with a couple of simple comments. I'm sufficiently recovered now, I think (blood sugars are good, palms are dry). Has an unforseeable comment or compliment knocked you on your behind with your face glowing lately?
