What kind of blood vessels are helped by the contracting of skeletal muscles?
Q. What kind of blood vessels are helped by the contracting of skeletal muscles? Please help me?
Asked by Marilyn G - Mon Feb 25 19:17:42 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Depends what you mean by 'helped'. 1. There is the skeletal muscle pump. This functions when you stand up and venous blood pools in your legs due to gravity. The skeletal muscle in you leg will contract (even without moving your leg). These contractions put pressure on the vein walls and force blood back towards your heart. I would answer veins... good luck

A. Broken blood vessels cause bruising. Put some ice on the area ( wrapped in a wash cloth) and the swelling and bruising should go away.

Can a dog get broken blood vessels in her eyes from choking?
Q. My dogs were wrestling outside and one got her jaw hooked in the other dogs collar. In a short amount of time, my lab could not breathe, but my aussie was panicking and could not get the collar out of her mouth. Now my lab has protruding red rings around her eyes. I think she must have broken some blood vessels in her eyes. I am planning to call the vet in the morning, but has anyone encountered this before?

How long to heal broken blood vessels from foot injury?

I can only bear partial weight and if i leave my foot down for 10-15 minutes it turns purple from blood pooling. How does the Acetylcholine causes dilation of the blood vessels?
Q. Blood vessels does not have any Muscarinic receptors or innervation.
Asked by lalolemus - Tue Jun 13 19:25:26 2006 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. "Endothelium-Dependent dilation induced by agonists like acetylcholine is partially resistant to inhibitors of nitric oxide-mediated dilation (15, 18, 22). Acetylcholine also evokes endothelium-dependent smooth muscle hyperpolarization, which is not inhibited by L-arginine analogues, methylene blue or hemoglobin (8, 12, 19). Furthermore, exogenous nitric oxide has little affect on smooth muscle membrane potential (19, 28). Therefore, the hyperpolarizing effect of agonists like acetylcholine has been attributed to an endothelium-derived hyperpolarizing factor (EDHF). "

I've had broken blood vessels in my eyes for years. They're so ugly. Is there any way of getting rid of them?
Q. I don't even remember them appearing, I just remember someone commenting on them, saying how horrible it looks with the blood vessels in the whites of my eyes. They are really visible. I hoped that they would disapear but i've had them for many years now. I've tried to find solutions to clear it, but I can't find anything that can get rid of permanent broken blood vessels in the eyes. I've even tried to find out if there is some form of eye surgery that could get rid of them, but no joy.

A. Are you taking any kind of blood thinners? These can include Advil and aspirin. They can make you more susceptible. I've heard that 3 grams of pure bioflavinoids per day can help with this problem. After a month, half the dose and then after another month half it again. If they return you have to up the dose again.

Is the flow of blood in blood vessels controlled by nerves?
Q. Like the medulla oblongata or the spine? So what part of the body would need to be damaged to stop the immediate flow of blood in the vessels?
Asked by mugatu5000 - Fri Jan 23 19:33:17 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The flow of blood to various capillary beds is often determined by the autonomic nervous system. The neurons would send signals to contract the smooth muscle in the arterioles that lead to the capillaries in the organ in question. The autonomic nervous system is not under our conscious control. There are two divisions of the autonomic nervous system. The sympathetic mediates the "flight or fight" response (the neurotransmitter is usually nor-adrenaline (otherwise called nor-epinephrine), and it tends to contract arterioles that lead to the gut. Thus, more blood goes to the heart, brain and skeletal muscles. The other division is the parasympathetic, and it mediates the "rest and digest" response (with the neurotranmistter acetyl… [cont.]

Why may I have more pronounced blue blood vessels all over?
Q. I noticed in recent months that I hve more pronounced blue blood vessels on sides of my body, from under arm pit to the hip, as well as on my lower arms. I didn't lose any weight, in fact I gained some weight during the same time. I have been getting chemotherapy for lymphoma and some steroid pills for same reason. But the doctor said she doesn't think either causes more pronounced blue blood vessels. What could it be?

Are headaches and popped blood vessels in the eyes related someow?
Q. I have had a headache since firday and it just wont go away. I take a pain killer and it dulls the pain but that is about it. My husband asked me what was wrong with my eyes today, and i looked in the mirror, and noticed BOTH my eyes had popped blood vessels. Like bad. Is this related to each other, and is this a sign of something serious?

A. You need to ask yourself a few questions: 1. Is the headache so painful that it wakes you up at night? 2. Are these "popped blood vessels" actually bleeding (or simply dilated)? If the answer is yes to one or both, then the simple answer is YES, it can be a sign of something serious. The blood vessels of the eye are very delicate and can become damaged rather easily. Even a scratch can cause a small bleed. However, when we hear about bilateral (both) eyes having "popped blood vessels" (subconjunctival hemorrhages), then this can be a sign of significant systemic disease. If I was to speculate it is likely uncontrolled hypertension. To be on the safe side, you need to see a physician immediately (emergency room) as uncontrolled… [cont.]

A. I am a nurse for an ophthalmologist. Any time you bear down by coughing, vomiting , etc. it can cause the blood vessels in your eye to bleed. It is just like a bruise on your skin, the skin is flesh colored and the skin of the eye (the sclera) is clear so you more visibly see the blood bruise. Avoid taking any aspirin, Advil, aleve, naprosen, anything that contains blood thinners or anti inflammatory. This thins the blood and causes the hemorrhage to worsen. Not much else you can to. It will be ok no harm done just looks bad. It may look worse before it gets better but no real remedy other than avoiding any meds that may thin your blood.

Is it possible to scream so loud and hard that you pop the blood vessels around your eye?
Q. My five year old daughter has quite a temper and this morning she threw a screaming fit because she didn't get her way and screamed harder than I really thought possible. Her head turned purple. Anyway, when she stopped to breathe, I noticed that one of her eyes was puffy and had tiny red splotches. Could she have popped some blood vessels around her eye?

A. The short answer is yes, it is. The slightly longer answer is that for the general population that is not often something they encounter, however for people suffering from connective tissues disorders or hematological issues, it is more common. If you have concerns, I would suggest having her evaluated for these things.

Smaller blood vessels and coronary arteries cause you too store more fat and less muscle?
Q. I read that Asians have blood vessels and coronary arteries 70% size of Caucasians. Does this cause us too store more fat when we eat the same amount of food? Should we eat less and try to eat 7-8 small meals a day? How often should we eat these small meals, every hour?
Asked by Tre M - Thu Aug 14 09:29:56 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. First of all I think 7-8 small meals a day would be crazy. Even people who think they're doing good by eating 6 small meals a day are just wasting their time. Our bodies are made to take about 3-4 meals a day, the reason why people started eating more meals is because of boydbuilders who wanted to make sure they were getting the most out of their supplements (because the body can only absorb so many nutrients in one sitting). As for the storing more fat due to the arteries being smaller, I don't think thats true, even the arteriest being 70% the size seems a little far fetched. But either way I don't think you should change your daily life from anything typical.

How do you treat hydronephrosis caused by crossed blood vessels?
Q. I have been diagnosed with mild bilateral hydronephrosis, probably caused by criss-crossed blood vessels. Doe this need to be correcrted, and if so, how urgent is such a case? I have suffered from flank pain and nausea, which are contorlled by antibiotics, but I am concerned about long term implications.
Asked by carnival baby - Tue Jan 9 16:18:18 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Untreated Hydronephrosis can lead to kidney failure, but with proper therapy the kidney usually returns to normal or near normal function. I'm sure your Dr. will keep a close eye on your condition. Just keep your Dr. aware of any changes in urine output, colour, etc. Worse case scenario is removal of the kidney. But mild cases rarely need that.

what is the total length of our blood vessels?
Q. i heard that our total blood vessels is enough to encircle the world 2.5 times (about 100,000km), is it true? any source that says so? and if so, how can we know the distance of the blood vessels from the heart to the eyes?

A. I've read 60,000 miles, which is 100,000 km. That's because we have so many capillaries. They're tiny, but they have to reach almost every cell in the body, so there are a lot of them. We know the distance from the heart to the eyes, but we don't know which of the thousands of possible routes a particular blood cell will take to get there.
