How long does it take a human body to decompose completely?
Q. How long does it take a human body to decompose completely, leaving no biological traces? For detailing purposes, the human body is male, average human height and weight, and is decomposing on top of the earth in an environment similar to that of the outskirts of Las Vegas. This is purely a hypothetical question that I find interesting.

A. There is a research facility somewhere in the States where they leave bodies in various states, ie above ground, above ground wrapped in plastic, below ground etc and try different conditions, i would imagine there must be a lot of variables that have an influence

What determines that a compound will decompose from heat?
Q. Why is it that potassium hydroxide (KOH) will not decompose when heated, but potassium nitrate (KNO3) will? I thought it just had to do with the reactivity of the metal?
Asked by MsSunshine - Tue May 6 23:21:52 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. KOH will decompose when heated, as will potassium nitrate. 2 KOH --heat--> K2O(s) + H2O(g) KNO3 melts right away, decomposes and gives of O2. The resulting KNO2 decomposes at a high temperature. 2 KNO3 --heat--> 2 KNO2(l) + O2(g) 2 KNO2 --heat--> K2O(s) + N2O3(g) In the case of KOH decomposition occurs at the O-H bond, and in KNO3, at the N-O bond.

How long does it take for your body to decompose after death?
Q. I want it know how long it takes for your body to start to decompose after death if not refridgerated. Because My mother died and all the autopsy report says is that her body was found January 31st. It says in the autopsy report that parts of her (like the lining of her stomach) were starting to decompose. I just want to have an idea of when she really died.
Asked by butterflies - Wed Jun 6 17:44:41 2007 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Decomposition begins immediately, but the rate depends on a number of things, including the temperature. It sounds like your mother's decomposition was not very advanced, so I'd say not more than 48 hours, tops.

A. an average human being start to decompose after 24-48 hours once the ATP supply of the muscles are depleted and the body begings to get rigor mortis. the time of decomposition greatly varies with where the body is lying and in which condition along with physical factors like temperature, humidity etc.

If you just buried a banana peel in your vegetable garden, would it decompose?
Q. If you just buried a banana peel, apple core, the center of the corn cob, orange peels and etc in a vegetable garden, would it decompose? How long would it take to decompose? Would it start to smell bad and attract more bugs than there already is?
Asked by G - Sat May 10 18:14:07 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Of course it would decompose... otherwise there would be banana skins and other bits of vegetables lying all over the place. The time it takes to decompose depends on lots of things... temperature, humidity, what else is in the ground with it... anything from a few months to a year. I would suggest, however, that rather than just burying the bits and pieces you place them in a composter. You then have better control of the waste and can speed up the decomposition process by adding layers of cardboard and leaves.

How long does it take for a compound to decompose?
Q. Benzene diazonium chloride, C6H5NNCl, decomposes by a first-order rate law. C6H5NNCl C6H5Cl + N2(g) If the rate constant at 20 C is 4.3 10-5/s, how long will it take for 59% of the compound to decompose?
Asked by MG - Mon Oct 27 22:53:36 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The first order rate law in integrated form is: C/Co = e^-kt, where C is the amount of reagent remaining at any time t, and C=Co when t=0. Then the equation becomes 0.41 = e^-(4.3x10-5 t) Since e^-1 is about 0.39, then the exponent is slightly less, and t is about 2x10^4 sec.

About how fast does an embalmed body decompose?
Q. I am not trying to be morbid, but someone I was talking with said that an embalmed body does not decompose, that there are bodies exhumed after over 100 years and they are still preserved. Others say it just slows down the decomposition. What is true?
Asked by El Hombre de los Libros - Thu Mar 4 11:43:19 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I heard of a civil rights leader that was murdered back in the 1960's. He was embalmed, and 30 years after his death he was exhumed. It was reported that he looked fine, changing little from when he was first put in there. So with someone lasting over 100 years, I think your story isn't too far fetched. I heard that embalming fluid contains liquids such as methanol, ethanol, and formaldehyde. These are toxic poisons, and they can kill any germ that causes someone to decompose. It is also important that they are kept in a cool dry place that is also airtight. Heat and moisture can do terrible things to a body. I don't think that embalming someone stops decomposition completely, but I do think it can slow it down quite dramatically. … [cont.]

A. Zr-95 has a half-life of 65 days. The decay equation is N[t] = N[0] exp{-0.6931t/T} where N[t] is the number of nuclei at time t, N[0] is the initial number of nuclei and T is the half-life. If 99.9% decays, 0.1% remains 0.001N[0] = N[0].exp{-0.6931t/65} ln(0.001) = -0.6931t/65 t = 65.ln(0.001)/-0.6931 = 647.8 days

A. Leave it out for maggots to get to, not in the bag or you'll have a soupy nasty mess pretty fast. Manual defleshing works too, remove as much hide, muscles, organs, and other stuff as possible. After most of the flesh is gone boil the bones for a while. Don't simmer too long or the bones go soft. Or here is a nifty online guide:

How long would it take to COMPLETELY decompose?
Q. How long does it take for a furry animal the size of a small cat buried under the earth (organic soil) 1 foot (30 cms) from surface to completely decay and decompose to bones? I am asking about muscle and skin decomposition and not bone decomposition. The atmosphere humidity is about 70%. Atmosphere temperature is 34 deg Celsius during day and 25 deg Celsius during night. Will watering the soil that the animal is buried in help speed up the decomposition. Thank you in advance for your answer

Is my snail dead, and how long does it take for a snail body to decompose when they die?
Q. I have a water snail, and I think he might be dead. At first he was fine, we had him for 2 years, and then he just stayed in 1 spot on the glass. It looked like he was sleeping. I thought he was lonely, because he was without a fish for a while. We bought the fish, then he went into his shell and wouldn't come out. His body is still there, but i don't know how long it takes for a body to decompose. How long does it take, and is he dead?
Asked by pet lover - Wed Jul 1 16:02:51 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It is sometimes hard to tell if Apple Snails are dead. If it is in the same place for several days, and part of it is hanging out of its shell, it is probably dead. Decomposition will depend on your aquarium. If you have fish or other snails, they will probably eat him before he has a chance to decompose. If you do not have fish, it would depend on your water chemistry, but I would think a few weeks at most. - -
