Is it possible to develop iron deficiency anemia, without having heavy menstrual periods?
Q. Today I was diagnosed with iron deficiency anemia. I can't seem to think of a reason for this, because I don't think I have heavy periods . Can anyone help me?
Asked by Sylvia - Tue Feb 10 20:52:42 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes. Most women are a little bit anemic because of menstruation. For a woman who is naturally anemic menstruation can make it worse even if it isn't heavy. You just need to get more iron in your diet is all.

Can regular Iron Deficiency Anemia be life-threatening?
Q. My sister has a bad case of Anemia that she needs iron shots. Iron pills aren't enough to build up the iron level and hemoglobin in her blood. That's how bad it is. I know that Aplastic and Sickel Cell are life-threatening. The Iron Deficiency Anemia I know causes fatigue, listlessness, pallor, shortness of breath, nausea, and lightheadedness. I think it can either cause congestive heart failure or cardiac arrest if not treated. Do you know if it can become really dangerous?

A. Has your sister ever had blood transfusions for the anemia? I have had transfusions twice for severe anemia. I have congestive heart failure. Please get her to a doctor immediately if she has these symptoms: Sudden weight gain (three or more pounds in one day, five or more pounds in one week, or whatever amount you were told to report) Shortness of breath not related to exercise or exertion Increases in swelling of the lower limbs (legs or ankles) Swelling or pain in the abdomen Trouble sleeping (waking up short of breath, using more pillows) Frequent dry, hacking cough Increased fatigue More info on the anemia and the heart: Complications Mild iron deficiency anemia usually doesn't cause complications. I think this might be iron deficiency anemia?
Q. I was beginning to get worried about how sallow and pale I am, and stumbled across a webpage about iron deficiency anemia. I saw myself in there-- pale, heavy menstrual periods, constantly cold feet, and my strange habit of eating my own hair and crunching ice. I'm definitely seeing a doctor, but I would like some opinions on if you think this is serious, or just normal.

Foods that are rich in iron are eggs, liver beef, green leafy vegetables, whole grains, almonds, avocados, beets, blackstrap molasses, dates, dulse, kelp, kidney and lima beans, lentils, millet, peaches, pears, pumpkins and watercress. Also you need to include in your diet apples, apricot, asparagus, bananas, broccoli, leafy greens, okra, parsley, plums, purple grapes, squash, turnip greens and yams. A. My doctor thought I might be anaemic and a blood test showed my B12 was low. Insufficient B12 can prevent your gut from absorbing necessary nutrients. This is easily rectified by taking B12 and B Complex tablets which are water soluble and any excess will be flushed out of your system. However, it turned out my problem was an under active thyroid. I was informed sea kelp if often used to help the condition because it is rich in iodine, but that's not something you should take without permission from your doctor. Lots of leafy green vegetables are always good - spinach, broccoli - but vegans may be at risk of not having enough natural iron in their diet. Women sometime suffer iron deficiency because of blood loss. Because iron is a… [cont.]

A. They'll probably put you on iron supplements and do further testing to see why you're so anemic. As a last ditch, in emergency situations, IV transfusion of packed red blood cells may be used. *** I'm surprised that your doctor hasn't ordered other testing since there has been no improvement over a few months time with supplementation. Perhaps it's time to ask your doctor for a referral to a hematologist.

A. Anaemia can have many causes, including: * Dietary deficiency lack of iron, vitamin B12 or folic acid in the diet. * Malabsorption where the body is not able to use the nutrients in the diet, caused by conditions such as coeliac disease. * Inherited disorders such as thalassaemia or sickle cell disease. * Autoimmune disorders such as autoimmune haemolytic anaemia, where the immune cells attack the red blood cells and decrease their life span. * Chronic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and tuberculosis. * Hormone disorders such as hypothyroidism. * Bone marrow disorders such as cancer or infection. * Blood loss due to trauma, surgery, cancer, peptic ulcer, heavy menstruation, bowel cancer or frequent blood donations. *… [cont.]

A. iron defiency is curable but it may take alot of time for it to be reversed.I have a book that says almost everything about all the vitamins and minerals we need.It says alot anyway for starters if your going to eat something with iron it helps to drink or eat something with vitamin C in it so it can help absorb all the iron possible. But do not overdue iron too much can kill you.Food sources include with iron are: Cream of wheat cereal,cooked,1 cup---10.9mg Lima Beans,fried3 oz---5.3mg baked potato, with skin ---2.7mg Broccoli,cooked,1cup---1. 4mg turnip greens,cooked,1cup---1.2m g Also if eating iron dont take an antacid it will reduce how much you absorb. Good luck.

A. Iron deficiency anemia is just one cause of anemia. Yes, it can be severe. It is very important to make sure that iron deficiency is really the cause before you start taking iron supplements. Talk to your dr. Basically - anemia means that your body's red blood cells are unable to carry the correct amount of oxygen to your cells. It can cause all kinds of problems. In general, anemia causes extreme fatigue, pale skin, weakness, shortness of breath, headache, lightheadedness, and often cold hands and feet. Iron deficiency anemia symptoms also may include: Inflammation or soreness of your tongue Brittle nails Unusual cravings for non-nutritive substances, such as ice, dirt or pure starch Poor appetite, especially in infants and… [cont.]

Is there a surefire way to tell if one suffers iron deficiency anemia?
Q. Without a blood test?
Asked by Versus18 - Sun Jan 17 23:55:09 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Surefire way? No. Because if you want to call an anemia, iron deficiency anemia you have to see that iron level is low and iron binding capacity is high in blood. So you need to have a blood check up. But check the finger nails of the patient. 'Koilonychia' which is curved shape of nails with a central depression (you can see pictures of it if you search in google) is associated with cases of iron def. anemia. But its presence or not does not confirm or rule out the diagnosis. If the anemia is due to chronic blood loss then it is mostly iron def. anemia.

What kind of blood test is done to test for iron deficiency/anemia?
Q. Is it the simple prick of the finger test or not?
Asked by CourtneyMT - Thu Nov 2 21:38:01 2006 - - 3 Answers - 1 Comments

A. When a doctor tests a person for Anemia, tests usually ordered are: CBC, Iron, Transferrin, Total Iron Binding Capacity (TIBC) Transferrin transports iron and helps prevent loss of iron through the kidneys. It binding of iron helps prevent iron deposits in the tissues if there is excess. Looking at the blood slide when doing a CBC, Iron deficient person's red cells will be hypochromic-microcytic; generally agreed that the MCV <70, the TIBC will be increased, serum Iron will decrease, reticulocyte count will begin to elevate.

A. Usually it is due to the bodies inability to break down Non-Chelated Iron and allow absorption as well as binding to hemoglobin for oxygen dispearsement...Get some Chelated Iron at the Health Food Store along with some Vitamin C which aids the Body in Absorption of Iron...Just be very careful with chelated iron during pregnancy as it can cause Miscarriage if too much is taken
