Do vegetarians really poop green or is that just an urban legend?
Q. Sometimes when I'm eating sushi or something I'll have green poop. Some say it's because of vitamins but others tell me it's because I ate too many vegetables.
Asked by Bill Cosby - Thu Oct 18 14:46:56 2007 - - 12 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Green poo is caused by many things. The ones that apply to vegetarians are eating way to many leafy green vegetables, or having an iron deficiency (the brown color comes from iron and bacteria). So... no, vegetarians don't poop green any more than anyone else. p.s. This is the weirdest internet research I've done for a question in a while.

help! my angel fish is sick with a bloated stomach and green poop coming out. What can I do to help?
Q. It's been standing on its head for a couple days at the bottom but now its swimming a bit but weirdly. Is there a treatment I can do? It has this weird green poop coming out that's stuck there.

A. if its scales are sticking out like a pinecone if has dropsy you can try giving it antibiotic food and using salt baths but this condition is usually fatal. If its scales arent protruding it has bloat. Dont feed it for 24 hours then give it the inside of a cooked pea. Dropsy bloat

My 6 week old baby has green poop due to change in formula?
Q. I switched my baby from enfamil lipil to enfamil gentlease a week ago. His poop turned green a day after I made the switch and it is still that way. Is this normal? How long will it take for him to adjust to the new formula?

A. I did the same switch for my 4 week old just recently. She had the same thing happen to her. But she's fine. :) Your baby will be too. Just give him some time to get adjusted. :) It won't take long.

A. There is some chemical in the food that you are eating that is green in color. Many vegetables have good dyes in them.

What did your 100 percent breastfed babies poop look like? My babies poop is always green?
Q. I talked to the pediatrician about this and she just said it could be something im eating. I have read that breastfed baby poop should be yellow with curds in it and that consistently green poop could indicate an allergy or hindmilk/foremilk problem. I have eliminated potentially allergic foods and stopped taking vitamins to see if it would help. She is emtying both breasts so I dont know if it could still be a hindmilk imbalance. My baby is gaining weight just fine. She is almost 3 months and 12lbs. If your baby is 100 breastfed what does their poop look like? The only time my baby poops yellow is when I go to work the one day a week on saturday and my hubby gives her formula. Thanks

A. I've had a few babies who immediately from birth had bright green frothy poop, horrible gas that had a nasty cloud around the poor baby. Then there are babies that are fussy, scream a lot, pull away from the breast, spit up a lot, have green poop but not the horrible gas. Is you baby like either of these babies? You are right about the hindmilk/foremilk imbalance but if the poop is always green from the beginning no matter how often you feed on both/one breast, that's probably not it. There are many things this could be, you need to see a lactation consultant and then see a pediatrician that is more devoted to finding out what's wrong with the baby. Maybe a consult with a pediatric gastroenterologist? It can be something benign or… [cont.]

A. Formula poop looks different than breastfed baby poop. Breastfed baby poop can look green OR have those curds. If your pediatrician isn't concerned then I wouldn't worry too much. Just wait until your daughter moves to solids! I remember well the first "man poop" my son had after starting baby food!!

My guinea pig has diarrhea and green poop!?!?! What should I do?
Q. I realized that my guinea pig had diarrhea about two days ago, and did some research about it. I cut back on the fruits and veggies for a while, and the diarrhea has stopped (I think) but he still has green poop. What should I do, and why does he have this? I've just fed him pellets and water for the last two days, and I am about to give him some timothy hay since we didn't have any earlier. Need help! Reply ASAP.
Asked by Sally Yourface - Mon Jan 25 15:28:48 2010 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Get him to the vet now! Fruits should only be feed as treats, and a cup of veggies needs to be feed daily. The must have unlimited amounts of grass hay as well. Timiothy hay is the most popular choice. The cup of veggies should consist of romaine lettuce, cilantro, cherry tomatoe, and 1/8 of a green bell pepper. Feel free to change it up and add a few other veggies as treats. Go easy on the watery veggies, like cucumbers, and easy on cruciferous veggies, like cabbage and broccoli.

Green poop and feels like there's a brick in my stomach?
Q. The past month I have been eating nothing but broccoli. Due to work and school, I have had a loss of appetite. And my poop is always bright green. Is this normal? Should I be concerned. And I also always feel so full, even when I go 3-4 days with barely eating. Is that normal, why do I always feel like there is a brick in my stomach?

A. There are a host of possible causes for green stool, from eating nothing but broccoli to Intestinal disorders. The other symptoms are more alarming though. You should go to the doctor to have the stomach issue looked at Also, you really should eat something other than just broccoli. man does not live by bread alone (or in your case, broccoli).

Is green mucousy poop normal in a newborn, or is it a sign of food sensitivity?
Q. This is an exclusively breastfed infant, and I have already checked with a La Leche League Leader. I cut obvious dairy from my diet, which has helped the fussiness, and has reduced the projectile vomiting and projectile pooping. BUT, the poop still has a LOT of mucous in it, and still has green spells. He isn't terribly gassy, but his poop has a "reflux-y" odor to it. The baby is 6 weeks old, and I have been off dairy for three weeks, as he was having screaming spells and projectile vomiting. Thanks, y'all. I tried cutting dairy first, as it is likely the biggest culprit, as I have dairy issues. My tummy has felt better, too, since I cut the obvious dairy. A friend recently cut dairy, and her daughter was diagnosed with reflux, and… [cont.]

A. I would encourage you to visit a naturopath right away. How long are your nursing sessions? Sometimes green poo can be related to not enough hindmilk. It does sound like a sensitivity to me, tho, not hindmilk... and a naturopath could help you figure it out quick. Try the mothering.com bulletin boards too, those mamas are very knowledgeable and the boards are regularly visited by midwives, La Leche League etc. I'm wondering if your little one isn't sensitive to wheat/gluten?

Why does drinking grape pop make my poop green?
Q. I know it sounds gross, but everytime I drink grape pop, my poop is green. It doesnt matter what brand it is.
Asked by Mean Green - Sun Jan 6 19:06:25 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Some blue or green dyes can make your feces (poop) green. FDA Blue #5 is one specific culprit. Grape or blue popsickles are another main offender. So why, the dye is blue or purple, does it make your poop green? The dye interacts with your digestive enzymes. One very common cause of green feces: Feces are normally green due to the presence of bile. As they go through the intestines, digestive enzymes turn them that distinctive brown color. If you have diarrhea (sorry), the feces pass through too quickly to be turned brown.

A. Stop feeding them nutriphase. You need to feed your rats a lab block diet, such as Mazuri. Mazuri is the best one you'll find readily available in stores, but it still isn't all that good. I'd highly suggest that you order either Oxbow Regal Rat or Harlan Teklad offline. Those are the best. You could also feed them a homemade rat diet found here: The green poo is probably from too many green vegetables in their current feed. Veggies also make your rats poo smell REALLY bad and they make them pass gass as well.

my 2 year old son has bright green poop?
Q. It started a couple of months ago and lasted about a week. The doctor said it was normal. But it keeps happening on and off. It will happen for a couple of days. Then be gone for a few weeks and come back. He has not been eating anything different. When he was a year old he had green poop but it was accompanied with vomiting, fever, and loss of appetite, that time he was tested and had a stomache infection. But now the doctors seem to not be concerned. If you have any answers as to what may be causing this I would appreciate it.

I am wondering if it is normal for a formula fed newborn to have dark green, curdled poop?
Q. She is a 5 week old. Her poop has always been green and curdled. She is strictly formula fed, but today when I changed her, her poop was a bit thicker then normal and was not near as curdled as usual. Any ideas would be much appreciated!!

A. It is always best to talk to your doctor. But most formula fed babies have poo like that. I would say it is getting thicker because her digestive system is developing. She fine as long as she is still pooing every day.

Our 9 month old daughter has been teething & for the last 7 days she has on an average been going 4-5 times dirty poop diapers - they are greenish, some times a bit mushy, sometimes just watery.. I am confused here. But she is very active, no fever, no other visible signs of irritation. I am concerned if she has been affected with any virus.. Any help... Thanks in advance.

Q. I just had a baby, but I never stop breastfeeding my 2 yr old toddler. She refuses a bottle. She now started pooping bright green like spit green pea pasty soup. What is going on? This can not be OK!
