A. Modulo 8 means the remainder after dividing by 8. You can do the question two ways. 13 + 15 = 28 28 divided by 8 = 3 with a remainder of 4. Ignore the 3. Just look at the four. The other way is 13 modulo 8 = 1 with 5 as the remainder It is written as 13 modulo 8 = 5 15 mudulo 8 = 1 with 7 as teh remainder. It is written as 15 modulo 8 = 7 Now add the two togehter. 5 + 7 = 12 12 modulo 8 = 1 with 4 left over. 12 modulo 8 = 4

Can somebody help me with a problem dealing with the ring of integers modulo n?

Explanation: To arrive at the answer below, the key idea is to examine what it means for [a]x = [b] (mod n) to have solutions means: ax-b is divisible by n. That means that for some k: ax - b = n k But then d must divide b, since b = ax - nk (because ax and nk are divisible by d). Proposition: If d = gcd(a,n) and d does not divide b, then [a]x = [b] has no solutions in Zn. Proof: Assume, for contradiction, that there is some solution x=c to the equation. Then [a][c] = [b] in Zn. By the definition of congruence modulo n, that means: n divides ac - b and so there is some k such that: kn = ac - b But then b = kn - ac.
