How can I keep pasta hot for a crowd if pepared in advance?
Q. I am having a pasta feed for my daughter's soccer team. I will keep the sauce hot in a crock pot. I want to cook the pasta in advance, but have it hot when the team arrives after practice. I will be using angel hair pasta.Any advice? I only have 2 large pots to cook in and need to cook for 18-20 teens--are two dutch oven type pots big enough? That's why I wanted to cook in advance.

A. It's a bad idea to pre-cook pasta. If they are coming to you house I would either cook it on the spot angel hair doesn't take long at all. You could undercook it a few mintues and leave it in a colander and rinse with hot water. This will remove the starch and the sauce mostly likely won't stick to the noodles. If the sauce is piping hot from the crock pot I would think it would warm up the noodles without have to heat them.

Would one box of pasta be enough for 5 adults to make pasta salad?
Q. I bought one box of rotini pasta for pasta salad. Should I make 2 boxes? And Can I boil one box now and make it and then add the other box later!!( I can't go to store till later to buy another box) And I wanted to make it now. THANKS! It's for picnic tomorrow! Having hot dogs, and Hamburgers too!

A. Yes, you can always add more noodles, but you do need to add more of the sauce/dressing so it isn't dry. If you have regular rotini, that box makes eight cups of cooked pasta. So you have 5 people with 8 cups of pasta, how much do you want people to have, the serving size is 1 1/2 cups of pasta, which is very filling. Add crackers or toasted french bread or any dry bread product to also help with filling up guest.

What kind of Pasta is better for you to eat?
Q. I have been trying to eat better and lose weight and excersize and have been doing pretty well with exception to those stupid cravings of Starbucks... Now I am craving pasta, however, I am REALLY trying NOT to eat unhealthy, so is there any pasta out there that is better for me?

A. I know you didn't ask for a "program", but here is one anyway. If you must eat pasta, your first answer is best. Drink lots of water, walk an hour every day except 1 then do stretching and upper body toning. No sugar No sodas No candy No chips No potatoes No pasta No pizza no corn no bread no burgers no fried foods Good Luck

Can you cook pasta in the microwave?
Q. Maybe people do this all the time, I just usually boil water on the stove in a pot and cook it the old fashioned way. The problem is, we got a new cooktop and so my husband took out the old one and it was hauled away with last week's trash, but he still hasn't hooked up the new one. We've been eating a lot of sandwiches and also at my mom's, but my son loves pasta with tomato sauce and I can't make it for him. I don't have one of those newfangled pasta makers for the microwave, but I do have a rice cooker, will that work? Any suggestions?

A. tell your husband to get off his ass and hook that stove up... but! try toasted tomato sandwiches (simple toast your bread add mayo and tomatos, salt and pepper to taste) as for pasta you can make it in the microwave get a microwavable dish fill it with water and let it boil, add the pasta and microwave it for 10 minutes after 5 stir it and keep it going until it cooks. try making mushroom rice... (you can add veggies mixed in the rice too) get your rice, use a can of mushroom soup.. one can to about 1 1/2 c. of uncooked rice. cook together and VOila!!!

What is the best way to microwave pasta several days after cooking?
Q. I am a huge pasta eater, and often cook huge portions of ziti or penne at a time. After eating my fill for dinner that night, I put the pasta in a covered bowl and refrigerate. However, after a night in the refrigerator, the pasta becomes hard and brittle, so when I want to warm it up and eat it days later, it is very stiff. Is there a special but simple way to cook it instead to get all the pasta at the same level of softness it is right after it is cooked for the first time.
Asked by someone - Mon Jan 18 14:49:53 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You should save a little of the pasta water and put it in the bottom of the bowl you use to store it. Make sure the top is on tight too. Use the smallest bowl to fit your pasta. These should keep your pasta from drying out. When reheating it, don't do it at full power. Make sure you have the pasta covered when reheating also. It won't be the same as fresh cooked, but should be fine.

A. Put a little olive oil and a little spaghetti sauce in a saute pan on the burner at low. Add the cooked and drained pasta and toss to coat the pasta. Transfer to the server and add the sauce. The oil keeps the pasta moist.

A. I really don't understand why you are even asking the question at all when you are already predisposed towards one answer already. You ask if you should add oil to pasta, and apparently you don't; so if you already know why even ask at all.

A. i love pasta too, i eat it all the time =) try mixing it up, maybe have ravioli one day, fettucine the next, etc. i think one serving a day is fine as long as it's not too big and you get plenty of fruits and vegetables (and dairy if you eat it) to balance it out.

How do you cook pasta in a microvave?
Q. I'm a bit fed up of eating ready meals at work - we have a microwave, a kettle, a toaster and one of those sandwich press things. I'd love to cook some pasta, but as we haven't got a hob or saucepans, I can't see any way of doing it, as you can't get a rolling boil. Has anyone successfully managed to cook dried pasta in a microwave and not get indigestion? I've tried those sachets of "microwaveable pasta" and they're horrible!

How best to create a mayonnaise based pasta salad?
Q. I'm trying to create a pasta salad like the ones sold at asda and M&S that contain basically marinaded chicken with pasta, chopped salad tomatoes, basil and a mayonnaise sauce. My question is how do I recreate it so the pasta doesn't absorb all the moisture from the sauce? If anyone knows where I can get a recipie it would help!

A. elementary my dear watson. olive oil. coat the noodles in olive oil ( virgin, extra, seasoned, whatever) before adding your mayonaise sauce. that'll keep it from soaking up the moisture and getting that soggy chalky texture when you eat it. when you have your noodles ready, just coat and mix. if you use your hands instead of a spoon, it won't break up the noodles as bad

Is the jar of pasta sauce supposed to be heated before pouring onto noodles?
Q. I made pasta for the first time - after removing from heat I rinsed in cold water because the directions said to add cold water to stop cooking, but then I had to end up eating cold pasta. I poured the sauce straight from the jar - all said and done it was a bad meal. Any advice?
Asked by simple - Thu Jul 17 18:46:43 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Yes - both the sauce and the pasta should be heated. You have some altenatives as to how this is done. The easiest way is to bring the sauce to a simmer on the stovetop, then add the cooked, rinsed pasta to the sauce. Or, rinse the noodles in hot water rather than cold. The reason pasta is rinsed is so the noodles will not stick together in one big glob. You can also wash out the original pot, add enough water to cover, and simmer the rinsed, cooked pasta on a very low flame until ready to serve. If all of the cooked pasta is added directly to the sauce, rinsing the pasta is optional.

How do I keep pasta from getting sticky?
Q. I've always had a problem cooking spaghetti. It always gets gummy and sticks together. What am I doing wrong? Should I add something to the water? How long should I boil the pasta? Do I rinse the pasta after draining? HELP!!! So farthanks for all the tips but... How long should I boil a regular size package of spaghetti noodles? Do I bring the water to a boil first then add the pasta? Should it be covered while boiling or uncovered and simmering? I just wanna get this right, finally.

A. I put salt, butter & a drop of olive oil in the water. You don't add the pasta til the water is boiling. Then you let it boil for like 8 minutes. You know the pasta is done when you throw it to the fridge or wall and it sticks... KTB---under cooked pasta is called al dente

A. How about a tomato sauce that you don't have to cook? I love this dish, and it's so easy. Be sure to let the tomato mixture sit for an hour, before you toss it with the hot pasta - it helps the flavor develop! Linguine with Fresh Tomato Sauce 2 cups seeded, and coarsely chopped tomato 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil 1 cup firmly packed fresh basil leaves, minced 1 cup firmly packed fresh parsley leaves, minced 3 tablespoons freshly grated Parmesan 3 garlic cloves, or to taste, minced 2 teaspoons salt 1 pound linguine Fresh parsley to garnish Make tomato sauce: In a bowl combine well all the sauce ingredients and let the sauce stand at room temperature, covered, for at least 1 hour. In large pot, bring 5 quarts of salted water to a boil.… [cont.]
