On the birth control pill, what day do you start your period?
Q. When taking birth control, on the last week of pills (the week that you normally have your period) how many pills have you taken before you start your period? I ask because I am on my 5th pill of this week now and no period yet. My only other signs of pregnancy are sore breasts and constipation, both of which could also be caused from the pill. I called my doctor and she said to give it some more time. I am just curious when everyone else normally starts.

How do doctors decide what pill to prescribe you?
Q. I have been prescribed a mini pill called microlut. None of my friends who are on the pill are on this and I don't have any allergies or medical problems. Only reason i can think for taking this one is that there is no 7 day break and i mentioned i am forgetful and need to stick to routines. Anyone else on microlut and is it as effective as other pills even though it's a 'mini pill'?
Asked by icanicant - Fri Apr 17 09:05:11 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Microlut contains the oral progestogen, levonorgestrel, this is one of the older progesterones and some might argue more modern mini pills such as Cerazette are rather better, having a 12 hour efficacy window the same as the combined pills. It was also essential that your GP explained what to expect from mini pills and their fail rate as it was his duty to do. Progesterone only pills are about as effective as combined pills, 99.7% as compared to 99.8%. On the plus side they have fewer serious side effects with few vascular issues, on the minus side they may cause irregular and quite prolonged bleeding for at least the first 3 months, though after this women tend to lose their periods all together. 70% being period free by I year of… [cont.]

How long does it take for the pill to affect your acne?
Q. I had mild acne because of really bad water where I lived. Then I moved, used my regular stuff, and my acne went away. Then I started taking the pill. This is the second pill I've tried. I have the worst acne now I have ever had in my entire life. I am 26. I am half way through my third pack of pills. Is this not going to change? Should I find another pill or give this one another month or two. It is pretty horrible. I would almost rather just use condoms at this point.
Asked by limniadblue - Thu Jan 29 01:21:34 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Hi Limin, i hope this answers your question, A major factor in the appearance of acne is abnormal hormone levels, which usually occurs during puberty. For women the level of testosterone, known as the male hormone, rise during the menstrual cycle, that may lead to acne out breaks, due to the fact that the subcutaneous gland producing more oil at this time. Hormone levels can also alter during pregnancy and menopause, making acne out breaks common. When symptoms are noticeable medical care is recommended, in order to prevent scarring, that can last a life time, that can occur from chronic acne. Once a dermatologist has diagnosed the skin condition, an individual treatment series can begin. This can include lotions, cleansers, laser therapy, [cont.]

How long after I stop taking the pill can I expect to get pregnant?
Q. My husband and I decided that its time for us to have a baby. I stopped taking the pill about 3 to 4 weeks ago, and immediately had a period. I know that quitting the pill can cause you to bleed. Do I count that as my last period? And How long does it usually take for a person to get pregnant after quitting the pill? I've been on the pill for about a year and 3 months.
Asked by crazyduotx - Thu Jan 31 16:13:55 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It different for everyone. Some women ovulate right away after getting off the pill, others it takes their body a little longer to get into the baby-making swing of things. Personally, I got pregnant within the same month I stopped taking birth control. My last period was on 10/10/07, on 11/9/07, I found out I was 4 weeks pregnant. I would suggest that you start taking the pre-natal vitamins now so your body is healthy and well-nourished for when you do get pregnant. Also, yes, getting off the pill or missing a few pills can cause you to bleed. Good luck and baby dust to you! :)

How soon after starting the pill can I start having unprotected sex?
Q. I started the birth control pill at the beginning of April, and am currently on my first period since starting it. I was wondering how soon after from the starting point of the pill would it be considered safe to start having unprotected sex? Keep in mind, I am using the answer I receive from this question strictly as a guideline. I will continue to have protected sex, but I just would like to know at what point it would be considered generally safe, or safer to have unprotected sex on the birth control pill.

A. From the day you start the pill you must use other non-hormonal contraceptives (i.e., condoms) for at least 14 days to prevent becoming pregnant. I'm sure you are aware the pill only prevents pregnancy, not Sexually Transmitted Diseases, but you referred to safe sex: Use a condom at all times, and even if you are in a stable, monogamous relationship, use condoms until you have both been tested for and cleared of STDs. The most common STDs are gonorrhea, chlamydia and herpes, and of course HIV/AIDS is the most severe. There are others like Hepatitis A & B, genital warts and 'crabs' (pubic lice). Hepatitis B is ridiculously easy to catch and in some cases can reduce your life expectancy more than HIV would. Even if you both think you're 'cle [cont.]

ProCaps labs makes a great supplement called "Hair Skin and Nails" formula, here is the link for that This is in capsule form and easy to swallow. This company, ProCaps labs is also extremely reputable and carries pure and effective products. I took GNC's Nourishair for four months, and supplemented it with extra Biotin tablets daily due to its low Biotin content. I took 2500 micrograms extra Biotin with the GNC pills. The Procaps hair vites have 2500 micrograms of Biotin in them, and don't really require extra Biotin be taken, but I do take an additional 2500 micrograms of Biotin for a daily total of 5000 micrograms of Biotin. How long do antibiotics affect the contraceptive pill?
Q. I've just started a 7-day course of antibiotics for a dental infection. I'm also immediately starting the next contraceptive pill packet so that I'll miss this month's bleed to make my upcoming holiday less inconvenient. I'm aware that antibiotics can reduce or negate the effects of the Pill and was just wondering how long this lasts so that I can plan ahead. I've read the leaflets from both the antibiotic packets and my pill packet but neither offer any advice regarding this matter.
Asked by Angel_Falling - Mon Aug 3 11:33:51 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. When you take a 7 day course of antibiotics the medication will stay in your system (body) for at least 10 days. During that time I suggest you use condoms along with your BC as your BC will not be as effective, as you have already stated. I have been in pharmacy for over 20 years and that is what I told all my patients. good luck. I hope you feel better very soon. blessings

I have been on the pill for years now and as i sometimes miss a pill me an my boyfriend always use condoms as well (just as an extra precaution) I was started on antibiotics on Sunday which i understand cancels the protection of the pill for the 7 days you take antibiotics and also 7 days after. On the Monday night me and my boyfriend had unprotected sex. Will the pill not of protected me for that day?

A. contrary to popular belief only the more powerful serious antibiotics actually weaken your birth control. While using a back up method is always a good idea the antibiotics that cancel out your birth control are the more powerful ones that are used for things such as TB and staph infections, not normal ones used for more common everyday things such as ear, yeast, bladder infections and such. Most Dr's if they know you are on b/c will also tell you if the medication you are on will weaken your b/c any also the pharmacist, the insert that comes with the medication( that apparently nobody ever reads) will also tell you. Unless you have a more serious infection though i don't think it is affecting your b/c but As said before using a back up… [cont.]

What pill is given at the end of a barium swallow?
Q. I had a barium swallow recently, and at the end of the test they gave me a pill to swallow while they watched through the x-ray machine. What was the nature of that pill? Was it just a placebo to see how I swallowed a pill, or did it have some purpose beyond that?

A. We occasionally have patients swallow a tablet which is basically just barium in pill form to see how it goes through your esophagus. - To confirm or exclude a clinically significant stricture in any patient with a history of solid food dysphagia but no obvious cause - To permit calculation of the true diameter of a constriction, since the magnification factor on the radiographs can be determined from the known size of the tablet

How long does it take for the effects of a birth control pill to leave your system?
Q. My husband and I want to start a family sometime in the next year or two. I have been on the pill for 10 years. I have been told by a few people that the effects of the pill takes a long time to leave a woman's system before she can conceive. My brother said a friend of his took 4 years to be able to have kids, and she was on the pill for several years. I have thought of taking a non chemical means of birth control, such as contraceptive ring until we are ready. But when I confront my doctor, he says I have nothing to worry about, that the pill is fine. A big part of me is screaming at me to get off the pill. Any thoughts?
