Q. I had mild acne because of really bad water where I lived. Then I moved, used my regular stuff, and my acne went away. Then I started taking the pill. This is the second pill I've tried. I have the worst acne now I have ever had in my entire life. I am 26. I am half way through my third pack of pills. Is this not going to change? How long do antibiotics affect the contraceptive pill?
Q. I've just started a 7-day course of antibiotics for a dental infection. I'm also immediately starting the next contraceptive pill packet so that I'll miss this month's bleed to make my upcoming holiday less inconvenient. I'm aware that antibiotics can reduce or negate the effects of the Pill and was just wondering how long this lasts so that I can plan ahead. I've read the leaflets from both the antibiotic packets and my pill packet but neither offer any advice regarding this matter.

While using a back up method is always a good idea the antibiotics that cancel out your birth control are the more powerful ones that are used for things such as TB and staph infections, not normal ones used for more common everyday things such as ear, yeast, bladder infections and such. Most Dr's if they know you are on b/c will also tell you if the medication you are on will weaken your b/c any also the pharmacist, the insert that comes with the medication( that apparently nobody ever reads) will also tell you. Q. If you have not been on the pill and having sex, then started on pill, what would happen if you were pregnant and wasn't aware and kept taking pill? Just being curious.

A. I was told nothing would really happen to the baby, the pills of course are just ineffective. But I would find out if you're pregnant for sure so you can stop. I don't think it would be wise to take it the entire pregnancy!!!

What pill is given at the end of a barium swallow?
Q. I had a barium swallow recently, and at the end of the test they gave me a pill to swallow while they watched through the x-ray machine. What was the nature of that pill? Was it just a placebo to see how I swallowed a pill, or did it have some purpose beyond that?

We occasionally have patients swallow a tablet which is basically just barium in pill form to see how it goes through your esophagus. - To confirm or exclude a clinically significant stricture in any patient with a history of solid food dysphagia but no obvious cause - To permit calculation of the true diameter of a constriction, since the magnification factor on the radiographs can be determined from the known size of the tablet

When can I start taking my birth control pill?
Q. I just went to the doctor and got birth control but I wasn't told when to start taking it. Its a 28 pack of Tri-Sprintec and the instructions say to take the first pill the sunday after I get my period. I got my period a week and a half ago, so does this mean that I will have to wait a whole month to start taking the pills? Can I start the first pill this coming Sunday?

How long does it take for the effects of a birth control pill to leave your system?
Q. My husband and I want to start a family sometime in the next year or two. I have been on the pill for 10 years. I have been told by a few people that the effects of the pill takes a long time to leave a woman's system before she can conceive. My brother said a friend of his took 4 years to be able to have kids, and she was on the pill for several years. I have thought of taking a non chemical means of birth control, such as contraceptive ring until we are ready. But when I confront my doctor, he says I have nothing to worry about, that the pill is fine. A big part of me is screaming at me to get off the pill. Any thoughts?
