Substitute for eggs in a pie?
Q. I want to know if there is anything you can substitue for eggs when baking. For example: when baking a pecan pie, what I can use to substitute for eggs? can I use milk?

A. I used to use the egg beaters- the ones you buy in the carton. I would get sick if I ate eggs while pregnant, but I could handle the egg beaters just fine! Bananas and applesauce can be used as well- Smash up or blend about a half a banana or 1/4 cup applesauce to use as an egg replacer in baked goods such as muffins, pancakes or yeast-free quick breads, such as pumpkin bread, and of course, banana bread! Bananas and applesauce add the perfect amount of thick moisture, like eggs, but they won't help your dishes rise or turn out light and fluffy, so be sure the recipe you are using includes a bit of baking powder or baking soda to help it rise if needed.

What non-alcoholic substitute can I use for marsala in the recipe for tirami su?
Q. I know that there must be a substitute because tiramisu is made in many Muslim coutries where alcohol is not used, but I am not sure what the substitute can be. Thanks, yes I will be using coffee or espresso, but most recipes give tirami su a marsala wine or rum base that was why I was wondering... Thanks Murray, I shall visit that site right now!

What is it like to be a substitute teacher?
Q. I have been doing some research and I am still left a few questions. What exactly are the responcibilities of a substitute teacher (K-5 if that makes a difference)? What are the education requirements for a substitute teacher (Duval County FL if that makes a difference)? How many days per month can you plan on working as a substitute teacher? Also, can subs work during the Summer at all?
Asked by Bopperella - Tue Mar 17 18:54:37 2009 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments
A. it takes the same classifications as a teacher. often people choose to substitute because they cannot find a full time job or it's better for the schedule to be a substitute. the days may vary, but you can probably expect 12-18 days a month. more in the winter usually.

How to substitute cheese on a recipe?
Q. I enjoy cooking and trying out new recipes. I have a cheese allergy so I'm not allowed to eat any kind of cheese. Some recipes that I've found involve cheese. Is there anyway to substitute cheese with another ingredient? I have an ulcer and its just cheese in general like cheese, cottage cheese, and cream cheese etc.
Asked by summer_of_1982 - Mon Jun 25 14:24:18 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. There are many cheese alternatives on the market today. Please look at these links: www.imearthkind.com www.tofutti.com(alternati ve cheeses + ice cream!) Those are my favorites and they can be used for a direct replacement in cheese recipes. There are many other cheese alternatives but make sure they are free of lactose before you buy. You can find them at many mega marts today but a health food store will have many more cheese alternatives. Also look into nutritional yeast. Which has a tangy, cheese like flavor and it comes in little flakes.

A. Rocki have no fear, milk is fine, the liquid is what carries the cheese or suspends it so to speak. Now add butter to your milk to give it more richness, much like w/cream and a little cornstarch or arrowroot to thicken it back up to the consistancy your looking for, remember that the cornstarch won't be it'd thickest till she's up to temp so watch and stir. If it tightness up on you add a little more milk. You're good to go

Q. I have been a substitute for one week and I can't get the kids to listen. What I can do as a substitute to get them to listen or where can I send them.

A. This question really needs to be addressed to the building principal, with specifics on who the offending students and the regular teacher(s) are. Not every school and situation is like that. Some actually have special support systems for substitute teachers--especially new ones--such as the other teachers in the same department or area offering assistance. And, it is the wise substitute who is smart enough to know to ask for help. IMHO, it is the regular teacher's responsibility to leave behind a sufficient system of support for the substitute (lesson plans, procedures, discipline policies) to carry on in his/her absence. If you note a pattern with certain classes/teachers/schools, alert the principal and refuse anymore assignments… [cont.]

A. I work as a sub in Ohio, and even though there are an over abudence of teachers here it's still easy to pretty much get as many days as you want. The secret is to sign up at like two or three school districts and not restrict yourself to just your subject area and grade. I'm a 7-12 English teacher, but I've subbed all subjects and everything from grades 4-12. Don't limit yourself. And try to get into school districts that use an internet based call off system. That way you can check for things on the internet and through a phone call. Super easy. Happy job hunting.

I am looking for a substitute cheese for the Swiss Gruyere cheese. Can someone tell me a good substitute chs?
Q. I am making Onion soup which calls for gruyere shredded cheese. None is available in my area. What is a good substitute for gruyere cheese?
Asked by ravirovanovich - Tue Nov 14 13:32:32 2006 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments
A. In order of preference: Look for some "Aged Swiss Cheese", or Emmenthaler cheese or any Swiss cheese. They'll work and taste better in the soup than Gruyere. I know Gruyere cheese is expensive, but there is really no substitution for it's unique rich, nutty taste, especially in a quiche. I'm surprised you can't get any in your locale (but then I'm thinking of the USA).

A. White flour substitutes. Whole Wheat Based Flour Substitute Where a recipe calls for white flour, you can substitute: 3 parts whole wheat 1 part rice or oat flour 1 part buckwheat flour For example, a recipe that called for 1 and 2/3 cup of white flour would use 1 cup of whole wheat flour, 1/3 cup of rice or oat flour, and 1/3 cup of buckwheat flour. A Wheat Free Flour Substitute To avoid wheat flour too, use this substitution: 2 parts rice flour 2 parts oat flour 1 part buckwheat flour You can also find a low-carb flour as well if it's the carbs you are trying to avoid. With sugar you can use Splenda which comes in a large bag at the market. You can also use Stevia or Xylitol as healthy sugar substitutes. Hope it helped.

What can I substitute chicken feed with on a long term scale?
Q. Chicken feed is expensive, and it is a drive for me to get to the feed store, can I substitute commercial feed with anything?
Asked by colonelseabass - Sun Aug 19 16:11:03 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Not really, chicken feed has many vitamins and minerals that hens and growing chicks (layer mesh or growing mesh) need. If you take these nutrients away from them, the hens and chicks won't be able to obtain the nutritions that they need because you are the only way they get fed. I suppose if you buy a wide variety of fruits, veggies, and grains that it would suffice, but it would be more expensive than feed. The feed store is a good drive from my place as well, so I stock up on one drive. Some feed stores give you discounts if you buy in bulk.

How will i substitute a yeast starter with only an instant yeast?

A. for 1/2 cup starter follow this formula and try it out. 1/2 cup tepid water (100 to 108 degrees) 2 packages dry yeast 1/4 cup AP flour Stir the yeast and flour into the water into the water. Let rest and get bubbly for 15 to 25 minutes. Add and follow the remainder of your recipe. I don't use any dry yeast or commercial yeast of any kind when I use starters (sourdough) The commercial yeast kills the sourdough yeasts. I hope this helps and turns out for you. Good Luck.

Q. Just ran out of the oil that came with my Panasonic hair trimmer. Haven't been able to find that or any other brand at local stores, and the on-line offerings, with shipping charges, are costly. Is there any substitute oil I could use? Thanks.
