Surgery (from the Greek: χειρουργική cheirourgikē, via Latin: chirurgiae, meaning "hand work") is a medical specialty that uses operative manual and instrumental techniques on a patient to investigate and/or treat a pathological condition such as disease or injury, to help improve bodily function or appearance, or sometimes for some other reason. An act of performing surgery may be called a surgical procedure, operation, or simply surgery. In this context, the verb operating means performing surgery. The adjective surgical means pertaining to surgery; e.g. surgical instruments or surgical nurse. The patient or subject on which the surgery is performed can be a person or an animal. A surgeon is a person who performs operations on patients. Persons described as surgeons are commonly medical practitioners, but the term is also applied to physicians, podiatric physicians, dentists (or known as oral and maxillofacial surgeon) and veterinarians. Surgery can last from minutes to hours, but is typically not an ongoing or periodic type of treatment. The term surgery can also refer to the place where surgery is performed, or simply the office of a physician, dentist / oral and maxillofacial surgeon, or veterinarian. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License What surgery options do i have for a femur fracture in a dog? Q. i have a 3 year old boxer about 50lbs, who has a severe femur fracture that is requring surgery. What type of surgery options are availalbe and what can I expect to pay? Asked by zetakittyrx - Fri Oct 12 01:41:31 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. It depends on the type of fracture, and just how severe it is. It also depends on whether your local vet has the knowledge and experience to be able to do the surgery, or whether your dog is going to have to see an orthopaedic specialist. As well as the surgery, your dog will need painkillers and antibiotics. Has your vet giving you an estimate of costs? The two main surgical options for femoral fractures are intramedullary pinning- where a length of metal that is inserted into the middle of the bone, or plating- where a metal plate is attached to the outside of the bone with special screws. Many regular vet clinics do not have the equipment on hand to be able to do bone plating, so have to hire this in at extra cost. Pinning is probably… [cont.] Answered by Loz - Fri Oct 12 02:09:06 2007 What are some signs that you have scar tissue from surgery? Q. I had surgery about 7 weeks ago for endometriosis and PCOS (surgery #2 actually). I'm not going into details about the surgery because if you know anything about PCOS or endometriosis, you should already know the details - it'll just keep this question from getting too wordy. Anyway, since the surgery I've had severe pain, along with diarrhea and really bad gas every single day. Does scar tissue cause these kinds of symptoms? The pain is just as bad as it was before the surgery & I had cysts that were nearly an inch in size on my ovary - you know those little buggers hurt like crazy. Anyway, I know I need to see a doctor - so please don't reply with an answer that thoughtless. My doctor has a 5 month waiting list - I can't wait that… [cont.] Asked by Roland'sMommy - Mon Aug 27 09:59:21 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Maybe it is a bowl obstruction? It is not something that should wait so I would go to the doc asap because it can be potentially seriously. I have had a number of surgeries for endo and scar tissue (4 going on 5). Each time at about 2-4 weeks post surgery I tend to get a partial obstruction. What happens I think is the scarring begins a few weeks after surgery. As it forms it pulls on your internal organs. It is painful and you have gas, diarrhea and sometimes vomiting. I hope you get into the doc soon so you can start feeling better!!
