Surgery (from the Greek: χειρουργική cheirourgikē, via Latin: chirurgiae, meaning "hand work") is a medical specialty that uses operative manual and instrumental techniques on a patient to investigate and/or treat a pathological condition such as disease or injury, to help improve bodily function or appearance, and sometimes for religious reasons. An act of performing surgery may be called a surgical procedure, operation, or simply surgery. In this context, the verb operate means performing surgery. The adjective surgical means pertaining to surgery; e.g. surgical instruments or surgical nurse. The patient or subject on which the surgery is performed can be a person or an animal. A surgeon is a person who performs operations on patients. In rare cases, surgeons may operate on themselves. Persons described as surgeons are commonly medical practitioners, but the term is also applied to physicians, podiatric physicians, dentists (or known as oral and maxillofacial surgeon) and veterinarians. Surgery can last from minutes to hours, but is typically not an ongoing or periodic type of treatment. I would disagree with her saying that cardiothoracics is boring, as it is quite intense operating on the organ that controls your entire circulatory system. I am in a pediatric surgery fellowship, and plan on further specializing in pediatric critical care/trauma surgery. To me, trauma surgery is the most interesting because you are forced to think on your feet so quickly, and are forced to make life-or-death decisions in a matter of minutes or even seconds. Also, another interesting option is urological surgery, as it is this specialty that most commonly gets to use the da Vinci robot to perform the surgery. Q. I am 34 years old and am having all of my top teeth removed and all four of my wisdom teeth. My surgeon will be stitching all holes and I am wondering what I can expect. I am scared to the point of high blood pressure. I will be having dentures placed in immediately after surgery. I will be completely sedated but am still very very frightened. Can anyone tell me if they have had this done and what I can expect. The pain does not scare me but the throwing up does. Is this common with oral surgery?
