What can I substitute for vegetable oil?
Q. I am making a cake for thanksgiving but I do not have enough vegetable oil. What can I replace it with? Butter? Olive oil?
Asked by Wicked Witch of the West - Wed Nov 25 14:49:26 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Applesauce, pureed prunes, rehydrated pureed raisins can all be used in place of the vegetable oil called for in a baking recipe...been using it for years, you really can't tell any difference in the finished product, and it's a HECK of a lot less fat than oil. Applesauce has absolutely NO fat in it... Christopher K.

Making German Chocolate cake and don't have the vegetable oil .. what can I substitute it with?
Q. Stores are closed and I need it made for a work party tomorrow. I have olive oil and butter? Am I screwed or what? I'm making a recipe just like listed but its called better then sex cake. But the butter will be good in the mix Vs the vegetable oil? Have never not used it. Can't believe I forgot it.

A. Melted butter, it will improve the flavor. Or if no butter, you can use melted margarine or shortening. If you have any other type of oil other than vegetable oil on hand - like olive or peanut oil, you can use those. I wouldn't use coconut unless it is expeller pressed or your cake will taste like coconut. Butter-shortening-oil can be substituted for each other at equal measures. If the recipe calls for oil, you will want to melt the butter or shortening first. Apple sauce is a good option if none of the others are available - BUT reduce sugar, as apple sauce is sweet and will make your recipe sweeter. Also, the applesauce will make the cake lighter and a bit more crumbly, not as rich and moist.

Can peanut oil be substituted for vegetable oil when baking a cake?
Q. I'm all out of vegetable oil but have tons of peanut oil. Would it work if I used the peanut oil? If not, what else could I use? It's a Betty Crocker cake.
Asked by Geek Chic - Sat Sep 13 18:57:56 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Yes. Peanut oil is quite neutral in flavour and pretty much all vegetable oils have the same consistency for baking, i.e. they have the same no. of calories, same consistency and same properties, other than flavour. Just remember to warn people that there's peanut in the cake, to avoid harming people with nut allergies.

A. If you have a stick of butter or margarine, it will serve your purpose nicely. Same quantity as the recipe calls for. Melt it in the microwave for 30 seconds or so and pour it in you batter.

what can you substitute for extra virgin olive oil?
Q. I am making hummus, and have no easy access to extra virgin olive oil or even regular olive oil. all i have is canola oil, and the store in my town has vegetable oil and a couple of other varieties, but no high end cooking oils. what can i use?
Asked by Kimberly - Wed May 13 19:55:20 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I can't imagine a place where you can't buy extra virgin olive oil. Doesn't have to be expensive to give you the taste that you are looking for. That aside, you can use canola or vegetable oil. The taste will be altered a bit, but nothing dramatic. When you get the chance, try looking into getting some of the many other oils that they have that can make subtle changes in the tastes of your food such as walnut or hazelnut oils. They ARE on the higher end for cost, but the taste change in a dish that has become familiar can be a nice change.
